ABUSED. Chapter 14
A doctor came in and asked for the person that came with me. Kayode hastily answered.
"What's your relationship with her?" the doctor asked.
"I'm her fiancé."
The voices started getting lower. I was slowly drifting away and the pain drifted away considerably. My body felt like it was floating and the world around me felt surreal. I requested for some water but the nurse said I had to get checked by the doctor first. The nurses then left to get a stretcher to take me into their examination room.
"I'm so sorry Jummy," Kayode pleaded desperately. "I never wanted any of this to happen but you made me so angry. Please don't tell the doctor anything. We will stick to the story I said earlier. I love you so much, never forget that"
I squeezed his hand in agreement, too weak to object. Just at that moment, the nurses entered again and carried me carefully into the examination room. Another doctor entered; a very young one, glanced at Kayode and told him to excuse himself from the exam room.
"But I'm her fiancé, " Kayode protested.
" Well, this is a private room. Please leave," the doctor was unrelenting
Kayode considered him for a moment before deciding to leave. He left, muttering curses and slammed the door behind him. The doctor's eyes followed him out of the room and turned back to me with a frown. "Your fiancé has a temper," he remarked pointedly and I chose not to answer. He got to work immediately. "Do you remember what happened?“
"Yes," I licked my dry lips nervously, considering telling him the truth at first but then again, I couldn't do that to Kayode. "I woke up to pee and felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. It got so much that I doubled over and fell. I felt the blood rushing from me and that was when I screamed for my fiancé."
He seemed satisfied for the moment and started examining me. When he pushed on my abdomen, I screamed in pain. He carefully rolled me to the side and he examined my back.
"I will do an ultrasound. There is a lot of blood and I need to be sure before I can know what to treat you for. He squinted some gel on my belly and glued his eyes to the monitor as he glided the probe all over my stomach. I watched him. He couldn't be more than 27, his features were fine. He was dark complexioned, obviously worked out and had a small dimple on his chin.
He printed some pictures, wrote or drew some things on it and turned to me with a sigh. "When was your last period?"
"Eight weeks ago."
"I'm sorry but you have a miscarriage."
I should be relieved but tears filled my eyes. Though I didn't want to be pregnant, the pain of losing it was unbearable. The doctor got up and left, leaving me behind in emotional shambles. The tears wouldn't stop. How could I have let this happen? I was wheeled back into the ward and a drip was inserted into my veins after Kayode got me tea from the buttery. He borrowed a cup and spoon from one of the nurses.
"Olajumoke, what's wrong?" he sat beside me, weaving our fingers together. I told him the news.
"You were pregnant?" he widened his eyes. I got angry. He screwed me everyday for weeks, what did he expect? When he got over his surprise, he shifted uncomfortably and looked like his heart had broken into two. He cried and blubbered like a baby but my self pity didn't let me have any pity left for him. I couldn't sleep till morning and neither did he. He kept apologizing over and over again, telling me how much he loved me. He was still whispering to me when the young doctor reappeared by 5:30am. He froze in his tracks when he found Kayode by my side.
"You didn't let her sleep?" his glare was challenging and to anyone watching, they would have thought he was my brother or something.
"She wants me to be with her," Kayode stood up, trying to appear intimidating. It didn't work
"If you get near her again while she's under treatment, you and I are going to have serious problems." the doctors voice was very firm and he didn't waver under Kayode's glare.
"I... " Kayode started but he was crudely interrupted.
"You'll do what? Beat her again?" the doctor asked viciously.
Kayode's eyes narrowed as I felt my eyes involuntarily widen with panic despite my drowsy state. "You shouldn't make those kinds of accusations."
The doctor moved closer to Kayode and whispered dauntingly. "You think I don't know what's going on? Her injuries are not consistent with a fall or she kicked herself in the stomach and the back of her hands too? There are evidences stacked high against you and I have an obligation as a medical doctor to report you. Now get out."
It was the first time in my life I saw Kayode falter under threats. He stormed out without another word.
"You're to stay here for a few days. There are lacerations on your back and bruises on your stomach. There's a swelling at the back of your hands too." I glared at him defiantly for threatening my boyfriend.
"I want to... " he seemed to have a knack for interruptions as he didn't even let me finish again.
" No you can't go home," he smirked. "And don't ask if I can report your boyfriend. I can as a medical doctor if the condition is life threatening as as far as I'm concerned, it is."
I was so tired and realistic enough to realize that Kayode would likely not be able to give me proper care. I huffed in resignation.
"Okay, I need some things sha"
"You can get them here. Don't worry, it goes on your bill, " his hand brushed my arm and it felt oddly comforting.
"Call me Dr. Damola," he said just before leaving the ward.
