WHAT WE OVERLOOK.
Ever wondered why books for kids are always very colorful and attractive? The always say we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and I've never really understood it. What exactly are we supposed to judge it by? They say a picture is worth a thousand words... Now that makes sense. The cover is a story's first impression; a glimpse into the life of the character you're supposed to delve into. It gives you a basis to the story around, to see the picture, the book title as a movie in your head. Maybe a story is awesome or deserves an award... If it has a boring cover, it's going straight back to the shelf.
The same thing applies to people if you know what to look for. I'm not saying judgement based on appearance should be the defining factor or whether and how you interact with a person... Afterall, everyone deserves a chance to prove you wrong: but you need something to go on. Sometimes that gut instinct is right, sometimes getting in too deep clouds your judgement and let's you conveniently forget the flaws, the frayed edges of your book, the peeling lamination and cracks down the spine of the book. But they still exist and they mar the surface no matter how exciting the content is. You just have to know where to look. Sometimes, the parts that seem physical or superficial can mean so much more, don't go right into the wilderness and cry about how you should have seen the signs. Sometimes, it's just there for you to see... A warning.
